Alex Saunders, a classmate of Stefan’s at SBHS, wanted to send Stefan and a friend to the World Cup in Brazil. One of the fundraisers that Alex had was selling knitted hats, headbands, and handmade cards at SBHS events and The Other Paper, help spread the news.

Bernadette Pierson, Stefan’s mom, recalls one of the phone conversations she had with Stefan while he was in Brazil. He talked about his great day, boating to the “meeting of the waters” in the Amazon river, seeing all the rain forest wildlife, and swimming with the pink dolphins. What struck her more than all the exciting and exotic adventures, was the tone of his voice. Stefan had just learned a couple weeks before that his cancer had returned, but he sounded so happy. From both his words and his mood, she felt both his joy and gratitude that he was experiencing this wonderful place. Bernadette will always remember the sound of Stefan’s voice that day and will forever appreciate the support from all of his friends, family, acquaintances, and those that just knew of Stefan. The tremendous community outreach spearheaded by a girl with a dream for her friend was one of the highlights of Stefan’s life because of both the experience and the feeling of how much he was loved and regarded by his community.
